Criado a partir do Terra Nova, São Bernardo e Grande Pirineus, na metade do século XIX, por Heinrich Essig, em Leonberg, sul da Alemanha, o Leonberger é conhecido por sua docilidade com as crianças. Mas não pode esquecer-se do Leonberger com um grande cão de guarda, disposto a defender fielmente sua família.

FAMILY DOGS: thus we can call the Leonberger. Created from the Newfoundland,
the Saint Bernard and the Great Pirineus, in the middle of the 19th century,
by Heinrich Essig, in Leonberg, south of Germany; the Leonberger is
known by its lovely behaviour with the children. But we cannot forget the Leonberger as a great guard, who defends faithfully its family.
